Family Class Sponsorship

Family Class Sponsorship

Immigrating to Canada permanently is an exciting opportunity. While there are several different programs through which to immigrate to Canada, the right immigration program for you will depend on your goals, abilities and your particular circumstances. By knowing your needs and particular situation, we will be able to help you decide the immigration program that will work best for you and your family.

If you are a permanent resident or a Canadian citizen, you can apply to sponsor a family member to live, study and work in Canada if they become permanent residents of Canada. The goal of the Family Class immigration program is to reunite close family members in Canada. Your family members include your spouse, or common-law partner, parents and grandparents, and dependent children.

To be eligible to sponsor a spouse or common-law partner under the Family Class Sponsorship, the sponsor:

  1. Must be at least 18 years of age;
  2. Must be a Canadian permanent resident living in Canada or a Canadian citizen;
  3. Cannot be in prison, bankrupt, under a removal order (if a permanent resident) or charged with a serious offence; and
  4. Cannot have been sponsored to Canada as a spouse within the last 5 years.

To be eligible to sponsor a Parent or Grandparent under the Family Class Sponsorship, the following requirements bust be met:

  1. The sponsor must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident;
  2. The sponsor must be 18 years of age or older;
  3. The sponsor must have enough income for this program (if married or in a common-law relationship, the income of both can be included);
  4. The sponsor and their relative must sign a sponsorship agreement that commits you to provide financial support for your relative (and any other eligible relatives accompanying them) for a period of three to 20 years, beginning on the date they become a permanent resident.
